What We Save (and What We Don’t)
At iodiasix, privacy isn’t just a feature, it’s the foundation of everything we do. But what does that actually mean? How do we ensure that your visitors’ privacy is protected? Let’s break it down in detail. When a visitor lands on your site, here’s what happens in the background:
What Data Do We Collect?
When a visitor accesses your website, our lightweight script captures only the essential data needed to provide useful traffic insights. Here’s the exact information we collect:
- URL: The page the visitor opened.
- Hostname: The domain name (e.g., www.example.com).
- Screen Size: The visitor’s screen resolution.
- Language: The preferred language of the browser.
- Tab Title: The title of the webpage being viewed.
- Referrer: Where the visitor came from (e.g., a Google search or another website).
How Do We Use This Data?
This data is sent to our servers, hosted in Germany, where it is processed securely. But here’s the key:
- We remove all personally identifiable information (PII).
- No IP addresses are stored. We temporarily use the visitor’s IP address to determine their approximate location (Country, City, Region) and then discard it.
- User Agents are not stored.
What is a User Agent?
A User Agent is a string of text sent by a browser that provides basic details about the visitor’s device. For example, it might say something like: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/114.0.0.0 Safari/537.36.
From this, we can identify:
- The browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox).
- The operating system (e.g., Windows 10, macOS).
- The device type (e.g., desktop, mobile, tablet).
However, we do not store this information. It is only used temporarily to determine the browser, the operating system and the device type.
What Does a Visitor Record Look Like?
Here’s an example of what a stored record might look like in our database:
Id | Browser | City | Country | Visit Date | Device | Hostname | Language | OS | Screen Size |
1 | Firefox | Berlin | DE | 2024-12-13 | Desktop | www.iodiasix.com | DE | Windows 10 | 2716x1224 |
Additionally, this record is linked to:
- The specific page viewed.
- The referrer (e.g., Google or another website).
And that’s it. No IP addresses. No complete User Agent strings. No names. Nothing that violates privacy or contravenes the GDPR, CCPA, or similar regulations.
